Chicago O’Hare: July 24, 2019 Trip Home

On the way back from the 2019 EAA AirVenture Oshkosh show, I spent a little bit of time in Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, waiting for my flight back to Boston MA. Although Milwaukee and Green Bay are closer to OSH, ORD has many more direct flights and it’s easier to find a rental car there too.  After dropping my car off and going through security, I arrived at my departure gate – Gate L2A – and began working my way down to the end of the corridor. Those gates at the end are across from the international terminal, and I was rewarded with a few out-of-the-ordinary jets that I hadn’t seen in Boston before my trip. A Lufthansa A-350-900 and Air Portugal A-330-900 added interest to the assorted American and United Airlines airliners during the hour or so that I had to spare, before darkness arrived.

My 2018 Memories

Aviation is alive and well, as I witnessed during my travels in 2018. Innovations are still forthcoming, history is still revered, and air shows and other presentations still draw large crowds. I traveled outside the U.S. for a pair of air shows this year, and attended 6 other trade, convention and air show events within America.

For single day events, I caught some early springtime sunshine at Portsmouth NH’s Pease airport, seeing the world’s first delivered Pilatus PC-24 jet operated by PlaneSense, plus a group of Italian Air Force aircraft en route to a Red Flag exercise.

I spent a few hours at the Rhode Island National Guard Open House and Air Show in the springtime, witnessing some great flying displays from National Guard, civilian and warbird operators.

It’s about that time again… EAA AirVenture, 2018! I’m so ready for everything “Oshkosh!” This will be my sixth year attending and by many standards, that still makes me a rookie. There’s still so much I’m sure I haven’t seen or done so my planning begins now… almost 50 days out. Some people plan a year in advance so I might even be behind at 50 days. I’ve learned most people plan according to who they want to see perform or forums and workshops they want to attend. This year, I’m hoping to do the same. On my list: The One Week Wonder, the Seaplane Base, and of course, the fabulous airshows that are put on daily!

Working with the One Week Wonder project is going to an experience I soon won’t forget...
